“When love is great, much can be accomplished.”
S. Suzuki
We are located in the historic Smiley Building in downtown Durango. My teaching philosophy for young beginners is rooted in the Suzuki method of talent education, which emphasizes a positive and nurturing environment, parental involvement, and learning music in the same way you learn your mother tongue. I have also undergone teacher training with Mimi Zweig and Indiana University, and my technical approach is influenced by many years of teaching at the college level, and by my collaborations with high level pedagogues and performers from Europe and China.
About Dr. Christensen
I started my musical journey in Boulder, Colorado as a “Suzuki kid” and grew up surrounded by that community and method. I went on to to a performance major at the North Carolina School of the Arts, and later received my Masters and Doctorate in violin performance from Stony Brook University in New York. I was professor of upper strings at Southeast Missouri State University for 15 years, and while there enjoyed an active performing career in the region, along with regular concerts and festivals, and guest teaching in China and Italy.
